I recently had a family member come to me who works at a daycare. She told me some moms who drop there kids off say they’ve debated being a stay at home mom but think they’ll get bored.
This subject can be debated to death, so I’ll try to keep it simple and short! There is no right way to parent!!!
So I’m here to tell you the pros and cons of being a stay at home mom! And no, one of the cons is NOT getting bored.
You get to see your baby grow up! Every single day. I can honestly say one thing I have LOVED is being about to see every new thing my son learns as soon as he learns it! Plus, maternity leave only lasts three months! As soon as babies turn three months they start to become so much more fun! They don’t just eat poop and sleep!
Their schedule is SUPER consistent! I know there are daycares out there that will follow your schedule and do a good job of it, but let’s be honest, most don’t and don’t care to! As long as your baby is happy, they’re happy. I’ve been able to get Xavier on such a perfect schedule, I know exactly what times he will be hungry, tired, good to go to shopping, etc.
I’m able to keep up with my housework. There are NEVER dishes in the sink and I never run out of clothes because of them all being in the dirty laundry. I can even have a daily schedule for myself, so I don’t get bored! A day for the grocery store, laundry, sweeping/cleaning, and so on.
It saves you so much money! Now I know this may only apply to some people, but daycare can charge an outrageous amount of money! If your daycare only charges $500 a month (which is very generous), that’s 6,000 a year! The average yearly price is closer to $10,000! That’s insane! I know it may be worth it for those who make $35,000+ a year, but why not save the money and stay at home!
Once your kids are older they’ll have more options of extracurricular activities. If you’re at work 5 days a week from 9-5, there isn't any room for your child to do gymnastics, sports, dance, etc. if they’re at a daycare! There are so many things you can do with your children throughout the year that will be sure to keep you from getting bored!
You don’t get a break! Unless you have consistent babysitter time, you don’t get a break! And for some people that just leads to ripping their hair out! It’s nice to be with your kids all day every day but it gets tough! And not having any breaks can be tough! There is no set time I know I can be in the car alone or even poop alone.
Missing out on another income. For the pros I listed the money you’d save over the year by not using daycare, over $10,000 on average! But, if you make more than that, then you’re missing out on another potential income! I didn’t make a lot at the jobs I had before I was pregnant but even losing my tiny income was an adjustment for me! I didn’t feel like I could go shopping for myself as much and buy my favorite snacks at the store. While it might just be because I no longer had my own income, other moms have said they were the same way even when they work! Simply because they felt all the extra money should go to the baby now.
Feeing lost! This was a huge one for me personally. When people asked me about what I’m doing or been up to I always responded, I work here and there and I go to school full time. Once I became a stay at home mom it was almost an empty feeling for a while of “what am I really doing?” Was I doing anything? I had to find confidence in saying that I stay at home!
People judging me. Everyone knows being a parent is hard and there is no “right” way to do it. Although everyone seems to assume their way is the right way. Once people find out I stay at home I get certain comments like
“wow you’re so lucky you get to stay at home.”
“I wish I could stay at home.”
“so what do you do all day to not get bored?”
It was hard to think of many cons because I LOVE staying at home with my baby boy! If I missed any that you guys personally feel are pros or cons, leave them in the comments! I love hearing different opinions on this topic!
