If you’re a new mom like me, you probably think moving with a baby would take months to prepare for. A month ago I would have agreed!
Me and my husband had no intention of staying in a one bedroom apartment with a baby until he wasn’t a baby anymore. Knowing that, we knew sooner than later we would need either a bigger apartment or a house, both meant moving. Being a stay at home mom is a 24/7 job and is the hardest job there is, throw moving into the mix can be a headache and a half. But! I’m here to share with you my tips to make moving with a baby easier!
START BEFORE YOU FIND A HOUSE.
I’m sure no one will ever tell you this besides me, but it has already helped me. Me and my husband knew we were starting the house hunt in May so I started slowly organizing and making lists in April. As soon as we started looking for houses in mid-May I got boxes and started packing! I knew that if we found a house the first or second week we were out, that would only leave us with 4 weeks to pack, and I knew that would be a tight timeline with a baby. Four weeks may sound like a long time, but when you think about all the things you have and all the things a baby has, four weeks is a fast move!
PACK EVERYTHING YOU CAN!
We are moving July 6th and I have packed over half of our things. Of course I started with the obvious things such as winter clothes and shoes, moving to all the extra baby things we have that we wouldn’t be using, and so on. Even with all of that packed I still felt I could pack more, every box makes the stress lessen! Since me and my husband are the only ones using our kitchen set, I packed all but four glasses, four mugs, and six plates! I did this because I know there is no way we would be using all eight glasses or mugs before I started the dishwasher! I also knew that packing the extra up was one less job I had to worry about the day before the move!
CLEAN AS YOU GO
If you take my first tip and start packing as early as possible than you have the time to clean! I ran across so many things that had dust or were just dirty from use and I cleaned them before I packed them. Why? Because once we move and are unpacking I don’t want to have a pile set aside of things I need to clean before we use them! That just adds to the already stressful job of unpacking! So I’ve used the extra time I gave myself to clean items as I pack them.
This tip aligns with the previous one. As you’re packing, THROW STUFF AWAY! I have the one year rule, if I haven’t used it in a year, get rid of it! I know it may sound extreme but it’s not! I can genuinely say if I haven’t used something in a year, I haven’t thought about it, or will in the next year. Now obviously certain things aren’t used once a year but most things are! Especially clothes. I remember my grandma telling me that if you put two shirts side by side and you always know you will pick one, get rid of the other! And that has totally stuck with me. I have a handful of shirts that I LOVE, and a handful I wear to special occasions and then the handful that I bought because I really thought I liked it but have only worn it once. The last handful is that I give away. There’s no point to keep a shirt that I will never choose over my handful of favorites, so why move with them? Why pack then and unpack them just to sit in the next closet and continue to get no use?
Moving with a new baby is hard! But these are the few things I have found help me! Things that have made this move a little less stressful. I hope this list helps you just as much as it has helped it!
